Artificial intelligence curriculum for primary and secondary schools

Artificial Intelligence Curriculum

Educational Concept for Computer Science and the Development of Digital Competence in the Field of Artificial Intelligence in Primary and Secondary Schools

Artificial intelligence is not a passing trend that will fade away.

It is a transformative technology that is rapidly reshaping every aspect of our lives. It will bring many benefits, but also significant challenges. To navigate these changes, continuous learning is essential.

That’s why at AI for Children, we created an AI curriculum for primary and secondary schools. Our goal is to provide a clear and accessible guide on how to integrate AI education across all subjects—from the 3rd grade of primary school to high school.

Let’s embrace a constructivist approach to learning, exploring how AI works, understanding its impact on our lives, and developing the skills needed to engage with its applications.

Nine lessons featuring Hoo and Ray, two friendly robots, designed to help young learners (from Grade 3 onward) grasp fundamental AI and machine learning concepts through engaging activities.

An interactive story-driven learning experience with William & Meriwether, concept cards packed with activities and teaching guides, and the Machine Learning for Kids textbook.

A set of six lessons covering topics such as disinformation, deepfakes, and—most importantly—the shifting nature of the online world under the influence of AI.

Sarah is an educational framework tackling critical issues in the digital space, including cybersecurity, online footprints, and cyberbullying.

Project-based learning materials and hands-on worksheets provide practical guidance on how to leverage generative AI tools to enhance school life.

Nine lessons—varying in length—designed to foster digital competence with a focus on AI applications in humanities subjects.

Six lessons to develop digital competence with a focus on AI in science and maths.

Why AI Education Matters

Since the mid-20th century, visionaries have recognized that rapid advancements in information technology would profoundly reshape our society—and today, we are living that reality. The impact of these changes is visible all around us. At AI for Children, we see both the positive and negative effects of this transformation, particularly in education. Among the challenges are growing generational gaps, declining student motivation, and increasing pressure on teachers and other educators. These are not insurmountable problems; they can be addressed. The key is to name them, discuss them openly, and find ways—together with children—to harness technology in a way that truly benefits people. This meaningful, calm, and respectful conversation must be led by adults—educators and parents—who understand the complexities of our technology-driven world. That is exactly why we created our AI Curriculum. We encourage you to keep learning and to be a knowledgeable and steady guide for the next generation.

AI: A Technological and Social Perspective

Understanding the foundations of artificial intelligence and machine learning, along with recognizing AI’s societal impact, is essential for navigating both the present and the future. Our AI Curriculum integrates both perspectives—offering not only theoretical insights but also practical educational materials that equip students and teachers with the skills to engage with AI applications effectively.

AI curriculum content

Our 43 educational resources cover all primary school subjects (except physical education), include media literacy, and offer several project-based learning guides. Out of these, 24 materials are also designed for secondary schools.

Each resource provides:
— A theoretical section to support teacher training
— A complete lesson plan for easy classroom implementation
— Printable worksheets for hands-on learning

For each part of the AI curriculum, we have prepared free webinars, the recording of which you can watch in webinars section (currently in Czech language).

We have worked out competence model which sets out what an AI literate person should know, what skills they should have and the depth and context in which they should consider this technology.

We are still working on a learning progression map that links learning content across subjects. It will also be the basis for the development of model curriculum frameworks.

Who's behind this

Many great experts, educators, school leaders and organizations have been involved in the development of the AI curriculum. We at AI Children are truly grateful for the help and support they have given us. Their participation in the project guarantees the quality of our work and has contributed to a distinctly multidisciplinary approach. Thank you!

The methodologies were developed in collaboration with National Pedagogical Institute of Czech Republic.
