Ethics of technology development and use

Card 01 from the Ethics deck

Ethics of technology development and use

The technologies we use every day have a profound impact on our lives, but they are not neutral. They are created and used by different actors, each with their own interests and values, which can be (and often are) in conflict . The goal of this lesson is to help students understand how these different perspectives affect the development and use of technology, and to teach them to think critically about the impacts of technology on individuals and society.

Ethics of technology

What pupils learn

Different people have different values and interests, which play a significant role in the development and use of technology.

Why is it taught

They think critically about the impact of technology on individuals and society.

How do we know if they've learned

They identify the interests and values of different actors in the development and use of technology and create an ethics matrix based on these. They analyse potential conflicts of interest and reflect on how different perspectives may influence decision-making on an issue.

RVP Outcomes - Informatics

Data, information and modeling:
I-9-1-03 defines the problem and determines what information he/she will need to solve it; models the situation using graphs or similar diagrams; compares his/her proposed model with other models to solve the same problem and selects the more appropriate one, justifying his/her choice
Digital technologies:
I-9-4-05 can direct his/her actions to minimize the risk of data loss or misuse

RVP Output - Civics

VO-9-1-08 explain the need for tolerance in society, respect cultural peculiarities and different opinions, interests, ways of behaviour and thinking of people, take tolerant attitudes towards minorities

Bloom's taxonomy

Understanding: Students identify the interests and values of different actors in the development and use of technology.
Assessment: Reflect on the interests and values of different actors.
Creation: Create an ethics matrix.

Digital competences

Contribution and development - understands the importance of digital technologies for human society, learns about new technologies, critically evaluates their benefits and reflects on the risks of their use
